News Letter Sept 2009

Nationally and locally St Ives Judo Club was in among the medals, which proves we are doing something right.
We have done exceptionally well this year, picking up National, area and county medals.
As a small club situated as we are at the end of the country we are not doing too bad, but we are not complacent and intend to try with everyone’s help to do even better in the coming season.

Club improvements

We started off by making improvements to the entrance putting in a vestibule to cut down the draught from the door, making the club warmer for those having to see to the paperwork.
This was done with quite a bit of self help mainly from Corrina and Lorna, we also had a lot of support from our friends the Lions club and were helped greatly by Councillor Joan Symons who secured money for us from the county and Penwith Council.
We were able to purchase accurate weighing scales which have been a boon for those going to championships.
Also a lap top computer and a projector were purchased with the help of Penwith District council.

The smartie tube money raiser worked well, and thanks must go to Nicola who coordinated this.

Our own little club championships was a great success with medals and pasties all round, although the timing of the pasties cause a lot of anxiety, and hard work for Colin who fetched and carried the lot hot foot  from the bakery.

We need to hit the ground running in September as the season starts again immediately we get back from our summer break on Friday September the 4th.

The first event our members are able to take part in is Welsh Nationals on the 27th of September, then the area course and grading on the 8th of November we have barely 4 weeks to prepare for this, the main instructor is Sensie Dave Hamblin 5th Dan and the course is over the Saturday and Sunday and takes place at Penzance leisure Centre.

Then there is the Koi Championships at Bristol in October both these events are for seniors and juniors.

Fees
We are a non profit making club, non of our instructors are paid, all give their time freely for the benefit of the members and we are fortunate to have some of the best instructors in the country,
All the money raised is returned to the club providing, maintaining and improving our premises and giving the best possible opportunities to our membership.

Although we are solvent we can not operate without money and costs are constantly increasing, the cost of national membership and insurance has increased as well as other running costs therefore we have found it necessary to increase the fees as from September 2009

New Fees will be

Senior membership
Joining £ 55pa Renewals £50 Nightly Fee will be £3, Students £2  Visitors £4

Juniors
Joining £50 pa Renewals £45 Nightly fee £1-50 there will be a family reduction for those with more than two children.

We feel that Judo is still very good value for money and compared to some sports and activities relatively cheap, and as already stated all profits are returned to benefit the members.
With this in mind we hope that everyone will understand the need for the increases.

Kaizen
This is a Japanese word meaning continual improvement and this is our motto, we do not want to stand still, we need to be continually moving foreword.

Last year we made great progress, seeing both the senior and the junior classes forging ahead and doing well at gradings and championships, and we saw our team of instructors add to their qualifications to teach and instruct, especially our young Dan grades.
We are hoping to introduce a further class on Friday nights to accommodate the older Juniors, this will bring us back to the situation we formally had, giving the more experienced contest minded juniors an opportunity to train for contest fitness, it is hoped to encourage some of the young contesting seniors to help with the training of the juniors during this time.
Contest tactics and rules will be taught to help prepare for competition.

We made improvements to our premises last year, but much more needs to be done, we desperately need new windows in the changing rooms, and our toilets are old and shabby and we have no hot water!
The club has rallied together in the past to provide better facilities and we ask all those who have the club at heart to help in any way they can to provide the best for our members,
If you can help in any way regardless how small or insignificant it may seem, it will help, remember its your club, run by the members for the members.
Could you run a Jumble sale, or a cake stall, a raffle or a sponsored walk or anything you can think of, let us know it’s for your kids.

See you in September,
